Thunder Laser "Bolt" and VertiGo machines ship with the lens bonded into its aluminum bracket. That is the right call for shipping, since a bonded optic arrives seated correctly and cannot shift in transit. Once the machine is running, though, it means the lens and the bracket are permanently one part.

This reusable bracket changes that. It clamps a standard 20mm ZnSe lens mechanically instead of bonding it, so a worn or damaged lens costs you the price of the optic and nothing else.

The focal length hack

The bigger reason to run a reusable bracket: you can swap focal lengths.

Every 20mm ZnSe lens drops into the same slot in your laser head, so switching from a 2.5" to a 3" lens moves your focal point roughly half an inch further out without any other modification. That extra reach is what lets you clear a large tumbler handle, work inside a deeper vessel, or get at a recessed surface that a stock lens cannot reach.

• Shorter focal length: tighter spot, finer detail on flat work
• Longer focal length: more clearance for tumblers, cups, and deep or awkward objects

Keep a couple of lenses on the bench and change them in about a minute with the included hex key.

What's NOT included

• Lens. By design. You choose the focal length and supplier. Any standard 20mm ZnSe lens will fit, and they are widely available on Amazon and from the usual optics vendors.
• Main body (the blue or red part). Reuse the one already on your machine.

Installation note: lens orientation matters

Install the lens with the convex side facing UP, toward the screws and away from the object you are engraving. A ZnSe focusing lens is directional. Mounted upside down it will not focus correctly, and you will lose power and cut quality even though everything looks correctly assembled. Check the curve before you tighten the clamps.
