Prior Gigs: Kory Cook and Whale hunting for monster Tumbler orders Two Hundred YETIs with Molly Banks Kennedy BreAnn and engraving a priceless Stanley   We have asked hundreds of PiBurn customers how they get their orders and got a lot of different answers.  No wonder. It's a huge market, and there are so many unique ways to make money. The examples that we can learn from are so plentiful that we have decided to start a new blog series called PiBurn Gigs: How to make money with your laser rotary. This series will focus on different orders that our customers got and how they did it to serve as an example or inspiration to you! Personalized mugs and tumblers are all the rage right now. Personalized mugs and tumblers are all the rage right now. They sell by the thousands on Etsy, Amazon, eBay, and individual shops. And it's only going to increase from here! Why are custom tumblers selling? There are two main markets for custom tumblers. Huge and growing personalized gifts market First of all they make great gifts for family, friends, colleagues, bosses and employees (And don't forget school bus drivers, teachers, mailmen etc!). A custom engraving shows them that you care and gives them a personal connection with your gift. These gifts make an incredible and lasting impression incorporating a personal element into a item they will keep and use for a long time, Second, there are many small businesses that will want custom tumblers from you. Massive market with small businesses (And even large organizations and corporations!) There are 32 MILLION small businesses in the US  alone, and that number is growing! (source). Do you know what they all have in common? They all NEED TO CONNECT WITH THEIR CUSTOMERS!  Each and every single one of them. They are trying hard to form a connection, to form trust, to form and grow a relationship. Even large corporations need swag for employees, clients, and corporate events. Tumblers are the way to do it! Tumblers are better than other gifts/merch in many ways. First, it's one size fits all! Second: They can last for a VERY long time. And most importantly: It is the only way to get your logo this close to your customers! They are literally bringing your company's tumbler to their face, sipping from it, and saying, "mmm, I love this coffee" and by association, I love this company! There is no other way to get this close and this intimate with your customers. This is why the demand for Tumblers has exploded and shows no signs of slowing. Our customers are landing HUGE orders right now. Even 2,000+ Tumblers in one order.   Did you know: Customers who drink coffee from a mug engraved on a PiBurn are 150x more likely to buy something from you! (OK, I made that up)    Given that backdrop, how do you make money with your laser rotary? Here are the top four strategies to make money with custom tumblers Even though the opportunities are limitless, we can bucket the most common jobs into four silos: Elephant hunting (going after huge orders from corporations based on relationships) Most of the Gigs Series will be focused on this bucket. E-commerce platform (running a shop on Etsy or similar for micro-orders) PiBurners Blog series shows many successful examples.  Local Business (Going out and landing orders at local small businesses) Community building (Becoming an influencer and relying on the trust of your community to create demand)   As we progress with this series, we will provide specific examples of successful businesses and side hustles that follow each one of the above strategies. Remember, the best way to learn is by doing! You will have challenges, no doubt. Don't be afraid to seek help. Our thriving laser community is ready to help you succeed.   Grab your PiBurn, pick a strategy and GO! Happy PiBurning from Len and Stan!

PiBurner of the Week: Sumita & Anuj Patel
Let’s celebrate our PiBurners of the week! Sumita and Anuj Patel owners at HOME BOUND CUSTOM DECOR (@homeboundcustomdecor) We are very excited to share the inspiring success story of PiBurners Sumita and Anuj Patel Sumita reached out to me about becoming a PiBurn affiliate a few weeks ago and we got to talking and hit it off. As I learned more about the couple's growth story, their journey really struck me as one very symbolic of so many laser entrepreneurs we speak with. The traits that usually lead to success - like not being afraid to invest in your tools, recognizing and jumping on an opportunity, and constantly feeding your growth mindset really make this story worth sharing. Also, like so many PiBurners' their business started as a small side hustle but within the first year grew to six figures! And when I marveled at their Instagram, (they surpassed 30k subscribers, woo!!) learned more about their laser class, and all the great things they do with their PiBurn, I knew we had a beautiful match! Let's dive in and learn how they did it. About Sumita and Anuj Sumita and Anuj live in Atlanta, Georgia, where they own and operate Home Bound Custom Decor. It is a laser engraving business specializing in personalized home goods and gifts. We are a husband/wife operated business and we recently welcomed our first child to our family this past May! Like so many other PiBurners their business is run on top of their full-time jobs! (No not just being parents ;) It's another beautiful example of a side hustle that turned into a meaningful and consistent income stream. We have corporate jobs (Sumita is an attorney and Anuj is in sales). In addition to our engraving business, we host a class where we help other laser owners grow their business. We are passionate about helping other small businesses expand their presence and sales. The Journey Home Bound started on the Patel kitchen counter in 2019 with a 25$ investment. Afterward, they posted a few of their DIY items on Facebook Marketplace! From humble beginnings... Within the first week, they received over 50 orders and knew they were on to something. This is where they recognized the opportunity and quickly acted on it. We quickly invested in not just one, but two, and then three laser machines (Glowforge Pros). And similar to many PiBurners they quickly outgrew the Glowforge machines and moved fast to invest in their growing toolset. Within a few months, we realized that in order to keep up with business demand, we would need a faster and stronger laser, so we invested in the Aeon Mira 7 and 9. Since starting in 2019, we have expanded into our own warehouse and even have two employees! We ship over 400 orders a month nationwide and Canada and have developed wholesale relationships with boutiques, real estate agencies, and more. Pretty incredible! With their growth, they are now job creators and also give back by teaching others the way to success in the laser world. The link to their laser class where they share tips and tricks on how they grew sales to the six-figure mark within the first year is: https://www.homeboundcustomdecor.com/collections/small-business-q-a-class/products/recording-of-november-15th-small-business-q-a-session Tools of choice: Aeon Lasers and PiBurn Sumita and Anuj use the Mira 7 as a Rotary-Exclusive machine so that they don't have to swap out settings each time. We love having a machine dedicated to our rotary-based product line and this allows us to be a lot more efficient with our time. We have the Piburn with Magnetic feet and highly recommend this for even easier use! They just recently launched tumblers, and these have been a hit! With just three bulk orders, they earned their PiBurn investment back! BTW! This is the real reason we build this tool. It pays for itself, and then it keeps making money for many years. How do they grow their business? Their approach is simple. They build strong relationships with large companies, and guess what, those companies keep coming back to the people they trust and continue to place large orders. While we do allow solo sales of our tumblers on our website, we focus our efforts on building relationships with corporations, wholesale accounts, gifting agencies, etc. so that we can obtain large scale orders for the tumblers. It's not easy. It's a lot of hard work, thoughtful decision-making, relationship-building, investment, and planning. And yes, a lot of laser firing! But isn't it all so worth it?! If you like their story, take a look at their website and visit (and follow them) on Instagram. All links are below. Examples of favorite projects The tumblers that Sumita pumps out on her Mira + PiBurn combination are undeniably beautiful. See for yourselves: [gallery ids="|"] As I've said before, hearing success stories like this is the main reason LensDigital is in this business. We are here to help makers like Sumita and Anuj succeed! The dreaded Slop Over Error and how to banish it forever!
The dreaded Slop Over Error has power over you NO MORE Almost every one of us has encountered it. The dreaded “Not enough Extended Space” or “S.L.O.P. Over” error causes much pain and anguish to laser people everywhere. There’s no need to panic though! It’s only your machine's way of telling you “Help! I think I reached the limit where I can move safely!”. Every laser machine has its maximum and minimum working size in width and length based on its bed size. This is to prevent the laser head from crashing into the side of your laser. The most important thing to learn about is.... the ORIGIN. Watch this video to learn all about the reasons for this error, to understand user origin, and how to deal with the error once and for all. https://youtu.be/spi-B7qGKMw

Our thoughts on Affiliate programs
Affiliate marketing! Love it or hate it, it's here to stay. Here are our thoughts and why we fully embrace it. Source: Forester Consulting Last year, US companies spent almost $7 Billion on affiliate marketing. The number has been steadily growing at about 10% per year and shows no signs of stopping. What is it? Affiliate marketing is a way for companies to grow revenue by selling not directly to their customer, but through a third party. The company partners with marketers called affiliates who are paid an incentive or commission to promote and sell their products. Some people have negative associations with affiliate marketing, and I myself was skeptical at first. But if you are thinking they are anything like pyramid schemes and scams, you're way off. This marketing strategy is a very legitimate way for companies to get the word out and grow. Some of the VERY BEST companies in the world use affiliate marketing. In fact, tens of thousands of reputable companies rely on these programs for a portion of the revenues. Just some examples are HubSpot, Target, Shopify, Acorns, and even Amazon. Why do people take issue with affiliate programs? Well, the natural problem that folks point to with affiliate programs is that when an affiliate makes a recommendation, it may not be genuine. The supposition is that they are making the recommendation just to make a sale and earn a commission - after all, they are incentivized to sell whether or not they love the product. We have seen our own affiliates being accused of providing recommendations based on their affiliation with us. Sadly, we have even witnessed our customers who are not affiliated, accused when making recommendations simply because they love the product. Of course, this is silly. There is NOTHING wrong with making money! Armies of salespeople do it for the companies they work at, athletes do it for contracts, influencers do it for every imaginable company, and even movies do it when James Bond drives the latest and greatest British sports car. I tell our affiliates all the time, do not ever let anyone shame you for having skin in the game. In fact, our affiliates have done a tremendous amount of work researching and then selecting the right accessories for their lasers and the right products for their business. They have run thousands of tumblers on the PiBurn, they have used the Vortex table countless times and they have lessons to teach, insights to share, and value to provide to other makers. They have become experts who can help others boost their business. And yes, they will get a commission if they reach people I otherwise couldn't reach. Good! They earned it! One of the biggest reasons why we started this program is because we believe in the maker, we value content creators and influencers and we want to share our success and share the growth. Still, the maker deserves transparency At the same time, some of the criticism I felt was warranted. The affiliate game does get a little "pushy" if some ambitious affiliates flood a group or a social media platform with repetitive content. Also, there might be confusion as to whether or not the person is an affiliate. This is the reason why we recently updated our affiliate guidelines to include important points such as transparency and respect towards the maker community. All common sense, but these guidelines give us a tool to enforce a higher standard - the same standard we hold ourselves to. And... here they are: Affiliate Guidelines When you become an affiliate, you are not just a marketer but also an extension of our company and brand and are expected to project our shared values: we are here to serve the maker community. Always be respectful of the customer and the community of makers. We are honored to serve the maker community and consider it a privilege. This is not just about hardware, we deeply care about the customer journey and want to help them along their way. Create unique content that shows your own way of using our products or showcases your creations in a compelling way. Be respectful of other affiliates. Do not post content in groups run or administered by other known affiliates. When in doubt, ask us first! Do not be pushy with sales. We rely on the power of PULL not PUSH. Create great content, help the community by providing value and customers will naturally come to you with questions. Do not simply post your link on forums or social media, always tell a story, answer a question with details, show a use-case, or add value in some way. ALWAYS disclose that you are an affiliate, never hide your affiliation. Transparency is important. There is nothing wrong with being compensated as long as you disclose it upfront! We do not tolerate “fake” reviews posted only to earn commissions. Only folks that have our tools and use them are considered for affiliation. Be sincere with your reviews and your advice to customers. Do not spam groups. Be selective with your content. Too much content in a short period of time is no good and will reflect poorly on the brand and on your ability to earn the trust of your customers. Help first! When someone has a question, please be charitable with your time and advice, even if that means helping someone who does not eventually make a purchase. If you do win a customer, check in to see how they are doing.

Help! Why is my image mirrored?!
Help! Why is my image mirrored!? We have ALL been here. It's frustrating. The image is mirrored and now your design is screwed up. How do you fix this?! Three options. 1. Rotate the rotary 180 degrees. Yes, I know it's weird. The laser should not care how the rotary is positioned. And it doesn't. But just think about it. If the motor is on the right-hand side the cup will turn towards you, but when it's on the left side the cup turns away from you and the laser doesn't know that. The image will be mirrored. 2. Mirror the image in lightburn. Yes, we know it's a pain in the butt but.. it works! 3. Buy this nifty adapter Len just made: Adapter cables It will automatically mirror your image so you don't have to bother with the first two options. Just 29 bucks, ships the next day. Problem SOLVED! Ahhh.. That's better!

PiBurner of the Week: Hope Yoder
[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css_animation="fadeIn"] Let's celebrate our PiBurner of the week: Hope Yoder owner of Designs by Hope Yoder About Hope It's a special treat to introduce you to today's PiBurner of the week: Hope Yoder. Hope is the owner of Designs By Hope Yoder (check out her digital files here!) a company she started over 20 years ago with a focus on quality, education, and mentorship. Since its founding, the company has created retail products for the home crafting industry. Think watchbands, vinyl, cardstock, and many many more. Hope also produces quality sewing patterns, machine embroidery designs, SVG files and has designed several lines of cotton quilting fabric. Her products are sold in hundreds of shops in America, Canada, and Australia. More than a maker, she is a leader. She built on her success as a maker and businesswoman but didn't stop there. Not only is Hope a talented maker but also she is an inspiration to others. She takes an active role in helping other makers... well, make it! As a published author and frequent contributor to crafting magazines and podcasts, Hope leans on her 20 years of expertise in the crafting industry to create an in-house training facility to host a series of in-person, hands-on retreats. The first hands-on retreat is in January and is open to all Mira Laser Owners and Lightburn Users. Part of the retreat will include introducing... (you guessed it!) the PiBurn Rotary. Find out more: https://hopeyoder.com/product/mira-laser-retreat-in-person-and-hands-on/. Other retreats include events focused on: digital cutting, quilting, embroidery, and software retreats. She lives with her husband Marv (married for 30+ years and she still claims he is the best man on the planet - how is this possible?) in sunny Sarasota Florida, home of Siesta Key Beach. They have two grown daughters 24 and 22. Their oldest Hannah lives in Sarasota Florida and youngest Olivia is married and lives in Houston. Hope's Journey Hope's journey started with a few wholesale products, and by the grace of God, we gained national recognition and requests for adding hands-on teaching events to help teach, mentor, and help market products. One of my most memorable events was working with Brother to introduce the first ScanNCut Digital Cutting Machine to the market while creating a training event for Brother retailers at their convention in 2013. During the launch of the ScanNCut machine, Hope started her first national training event at Brother Convention and named it the “Sip & Sew Tea Party." Before she knew it, she had over 100 events booked. One hundred was way more than Hope expected and was the catalyst that started the educational events they are still hosting today. With that sort of traction, other opportunities came naturally, and Hope was always ready I have had the honor of being a spokesperson and the inspiration behind the brand of products for Embellish By RNK Distributing. During this journey, we created software programs for embroidery machines and digital cutters, embroidery stabilizers, threads, sewing, quilting, and digital cutting accessories you can find in your local shops. - Hope Yoder When I first got to know Hope, I immediately wanted to learn more about her business and her growing community. She struck me as savvy and practical yet very honest, open, and truly passionate about helping other makers succeed, which was in line with our brand mission. I was so impressed with her and was, of course, thrilled to get a PiBurn in her hands. Very soon after I offered Hope an affiliation with LensDigital and we are honored to have her join the club! If you learned about the PiBurn with Hope's help, please use her link! Why Hope chose PiBurn for her Aeon Mira 9 In her own words... I knew I needed not just any rotary but a PiBurn after watching Emily Caroline & Jeremy Jones' videos. We have an online store where we offer products and fabric. I work locally with real estate agents and commercial businesses to make branded merchandise that sets them above the rest—what pushed me to make the purchase was having several local businesses asking for engraved wine glasses and tumblers. I knew I needed to go ahead and order the PiBurn, and all I can say is WOW! The rotary is very impressive; you can see and feel the quality when you take it out of the box. I've only had it for a short time and am impressed with how good the tumblers look and how easy it is to use. I can't wait until the Christmas rush is over to spend some quality time with my PiBurn. Makers like Hope inspire us to create great products and help makers succeed. But what inspires Hope? What inspires Hope There is nothing better than making something with your own hands and touching people's hearts and imaginations with your craft. And inspiration? It can come from anywhere! In Hope's words: I am a maker, a do-er, and a get-er-done kind of girl. I find inspiration everywhere I look. I may see a pretty purse, which inspires me to design a new sewing pattern. Once I was teaching at a sewing machine convention in Nashville, TN, and went to the Grand Ole Opry and saw Porter Wagner, known for his flashy rhinestone suits. He had a gorgeous white suit with lace overlays, which inspired my Nashville Lace Embroidery Collection. - Hope Yoder Advice for Makers Reading Hope's content we picked up a recurring theme. She urges makers to not leave money on the table or worse let it go to someplace else. Whenever there is a customer who wants something done, put yourself in a position to be able to do it. Need a new skill? Acquire it! Need a tool? Get it! Don't be afraid to invest in yourself. Chances are, it will lead to more business and growth in the future. Beautiful advice. Hope's Shop, YouTube, and Facebook Pages Browse her website for an incredible selection of beautifully designed items: My Shop - www.HopeYoder.com Check out her videos! YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/c/HopeYoderHopeSewCreative And connect with her awesome and growing communities on Facebook: Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/hopeyoderdesigns Facebook Engraving Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/engravingwithhopeyoder Don't forget to give her a follow on other social platforms: Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/hopeyodercreates Pinterest - https://www.pinterest.com/hopeyoder/_created/ You'll quickly see that Hope is prolific with her content creation and serious about the quality and value add of her content. Thank you Hope for making and giving back! It is a true honor to be able to put our PiBurn in the hands of a maker, a leader, a master of her craft. This is what drives us at LensDigital - beyond creating simply great tools - it's helping people like Hope be even more successful in their endeavors. What could be more rewarding than that? For us, this is the main reason to keep on PiBurning! Hope Yoder, Thank you!!! For being a leader, an inspiration, and of course a PiBurner! That's all for today my friends, and Happy PiBurning! Stan & Len PS: Want to be a featured PiBurner yourself? Find out how! [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Help! Why is the image stretched on my cup? How to fix an image on a laser rotary.
Laser Engravers: Does your Laser Rotary Stretch your Image? You've created the perfect design in your graphics software, set up your cup on the laser rotary attachment (hopefully a PiBurn!), and sent the job to your laser. But when you check the cup you realize that the image is distorted. Frustrating. It doesn't look like the original design because it is either stretched, warped, or is oval when it was meant to be circular. You're thinking: I don't understand why my laser rotary stretches images. What could I be doing wrong?! Well, in this blog post we will try to help with the most common cure for the stretched (or squished) or distorted images on your cup. Here are some of the most common reasons why your image looks wrong and the steps you should take to make sure the image is perfect. In order of most common problems (assuming you have a roller rotary): What to do when a laser rotary stretches images. Three things to check. 1. Setup on the laser rotary: Check your tumbler's neck and body diameter - are they different? This is the most common cause of distorted images - especially if your designs appear stretched on the tumbler. Here is something people don't always realize. If your flask or water bottle has a narrow neck, AND the neck is placed on the motorized wheels, then the body of the flask is rotating further distance than the neck and the image will be stretched. Your settings are accounting for the wheel diameter, not the object diameter but the laser thinks the bottle is moving the same as the motorized wheels, not further. But in fact, the body is moving more than the neck! To solve this do one of the following: Take off the clamp from your PiBurn and flip the bottle around on the rotary so that the narrow neck is on the smaller wheels (back wheels). This is the most common solution and works most of the time when you do not need the clamp. If you need more friction get the Mega Clamp for the PiBurn. Adjust your image. Given your image will appear stretched, adjust down your image to compensate. Use masking tape and lower power to get it just right and not mess up any cups. Takes a little tweaking. Change your steps per rotation. You will need to reduce your steps. We almost never recommend this method for a number of reasons, one of which is people sometimes forget to change their steps back! 2. Foiled by an Optical Illusion: Measure your image That was supposed to be a circle but the image looks quite oval! This is the second most common problem we hear and it's caused by an optical illusion of a circular image superimposed on a cylindrical object. It will appear oval to the eye! If you think about it, the parts closer to the edges are further away from the observer, hence they look smaller. The difference is tiny but with a circle engraved on a smaller diameter tumbler, it's very visible. Check the image and engrave it on a flat surface. Now, take your tumbler and measure the height and width of the image. They are probably the same! The best way to adjust for this is to manipulate the image and compensate for the illusion. Some people have got this down to a science and created a handy calculator that helps you with the dimensions based on your image. Check it out in the files section of the group PiBurn Labs (our official support group) Direct link to file. 3. Steps per rotation are off: Dial in your laser rotary Check your steps per rotation and perform a 100mm test to make sure you have dialed in your laser rotary correctly! Pulses (or Steps) per rotation settings are a very common source of headaches but can be avoided by performing a simple test and dialing in your rotary. With a PiBurn, you only need to do that once! Perform the test described in Chapter IV (Page 18) of the PiBurn manual If you are a visual learner, watch this video instead. 4. Can the cup be slipping on your rotary? (Does it have a heavy handle?) This is the one clear drawback of using a roller as opposed to a chuck as discussed here at length. By the way! Check out our new chuck rotary, the PiBurn Grip. This is hands-down the best chuck rotary for laser engraving - and the Grip don't slip! A roller rotary relies on friction between the object you are engraving and the wheels it is resting on. An unbalanced object or a cup with a large, heavy handle will test the tension between the object and the wheel and it will increase the chances your cup will slip. Now, the PiBurn does an amazing job at reducing this slippage: Enter the new metal clamp. If you have the latest metal clamp for the PiBurn 4.0, you are lucky! This is the only clamp on the market that has adjustable tension. Go ahead and give that thumbscrew a spin to increase tension and reduce slipping even on the most stubborn cups with handles. If you still see some slipping, you can add a counterweight like a magnet to opposite where to handle is. 5. Adjust the belt tension on your PiBurn Laser Rotary Attachment After doing thousands of orders on the PiBurn, our customers find that it can use some TLC. If your images have problems at the very edges (start or end of engraving) most likely, a loose belt or pulley is to blame. Here is how you check to make sure you are up and running smoothly again: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gPvIbF8Olk 6. Thanks, but nothing you mentioned helped! If this still does not help, post your image with as much detail as possible (which laser do you have? What settings are you using?) on our support group PiBurn Labs. We have amazing people who selflessly help other makers on our forum. They are true PiBurners and they might be able to help you as well! Hope this helps the many of you struggling with getting your image to perfection on your tumblers. We are here to help! Happy PiBurning! Len and Stan
