PiBurn OMNI: Stacked or CatDog? The differences in LensDigital’s laser rotary configuration

The PiBurn OMNI is a powerful laser rotary that combines both a chuck system AND a roller system, comes with two motors and can handle anything you throw at it.

STACKED
CATDOG

It can be configured in two ways. Stacked, as it is pictured on the first image above, or CatDog where the Grip is on the opposite end of the roller wheels.

After a year or so of testing we recommend the CatDog orientation.

CatDog Pros:

  1. Faster to swap between two drive systems, no mounting/dismounting required
  2. Lower profile
  3. Both systems are always ready to go

CatDog Cons:

  1. Larger footprint may not fit in smaller laser beds (Boss 1420 will not fit)
  2. One motor is facing the other so one motor might need to mirror the image

Stacked Pros:

  1. Smaller footprint fits into smaller machines
  2. Both motors on the right side, no mirroring the image is required
  3. Objects with larger diameter can be engraved due to added height from the rail.

Stacked Cons:

  1. Higher profile, not good for machines with limited Z-travel
  2. Need to dismount the Grip and re-attach the Clamp and Front Stopper when you want to use the roller, and mount it again when you want to use the Grip – longer set-up times and swap times.

Who should get the CatDog: Anyone with a medium to large laser bed

Who should get the Stacked: Smaller laser beds.

Is the decision final?

NO! Don’t sweat it! If you buy a Cat-Dog, you can always attach a Grip in a stacked configuration! If you get stacked, you can always get a cheap conversion kit and change your configuration.
